*SEASSI wishes to thank the Madison Ultimate Frisbee Association for generously donating discs for the Ultimate Tournament*

Last year, Team Burma dominated the regular season going undefeated until the elimination rounds when Team Indonesia staged an upset in the championship match. Which language will win this year?

If you don’t know how to play Ultimate, or if you’ve never even thrown a Frisbee, Don’t Worry! An optional clinics will be held this Thursday, June 22 (3-5 PM). Come and learn the basics from our resident expert and fixture of the Madison Ultimate scene, Chris Lieven: throwing, catching, and beginning Ultimate strategy. Treat his words as you would your finest batik.

Teams need to start forming ASAP! Each language should designate a captain and captains should submit a tentative roster by this Wednesday evening, June 21, by email to seassi@intl-institute.wisc.edu A “full” ultimate team needs 7 players on the field. If your team does not have enough players, you may combine your team with another small team.

All Frisbee events will be held at the North end of the UBay fields (Click here for a map of the UBay fields...and here for a detailed map of the fields reserved for SEASSI). The FREE 80 Bus travels to and from the fields every 15-20 minutes (map of the 80 bus route).

Games will be held every Friday from 4-7 PM.

Rules for SEASSI Ultimate

  • Play fair! Ultimate requires that players call their own fouls. If you believe you have been fouled, it is your duty to yell "Foul!" at which point all play stops. The other player involved can either agree ("yes, I fouled you") or disagree/contest the foul. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone. Chris will help you figure out fouls during a game. After the foul has been resolved, all players on the field must get back to where they were when the foul was called. Before the play can resume, the thrower should let the mark (the defender) tap the disc and yell, "Disc in!" This lets everyone know that play has restarted. In case of disputed calls, Chris has the FINAL word.
  • There are NO stall counts (time limit on holding the disc)
  • NO traveling. When you get the disc, stop. You can pick up one foot, but the other must stay in one place as your pivot foot.
  • Ultimate is a non-contact sport. Incidental contact is allowed when players are going for the disc, everything else is prohibited. And especially..."Dangerous, aggressive behavior, or reckless disregard for the safety of fellow players or harmful endangerment is always a foul. This rule is not superseded by any other rule." (Rule XVI. I. 4, Official Rules of Ultimate, 10th ed.)
  • You cannot touch the disc when it is in the possession of another player.
  • Games are time-capped, win by two. Translation: After one hour, whichever team is leading by two points wins. If after one hour fifteen minutes no team has reached a two-point advantage, games will go to sudden-death.
  • Only students from a specific language class are eligible to play for their language team. If a language team is using a player not in their language class in a game, they will forfeit that game.
  • Have Fun! Remember that Ultimate stresses the Spirit of the Game.
