SEASSI Lecture Series
June 27 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Join us in a lecture on Burmese Social Movements!
Given by Tharaphi Than (Associate Professor, Department of World Languages and Cultures, Northern Illinois University), this talk will focus visual images and slogans of protests from the 1938 oilfield workers’ strike to the recent resistance against the 2021 coup in Burma/Myanmar. Through the images, slogans, cartoons, songs, and posters, we will discuss the underlying ideological discourses and aspirations for a new society. This talk will also highlight how protesters use the cultural expressions to demand political and so
cial change, mobilize people, rally support, poke fun of those in power, and shape public opinion.
Offered in-person and via Zoom
