The Southeast Asian Flagship Language Initiative (SEAFLI) is a special initiative of the Boren Awards for International Study offering awardees the opportunity for intensive language study of Indonesian, Thai, and Vietnamese and for cultural immersion by participating in domestic and overseas language programs. Participants in SEAFLI may start with no language proficiency through advanced proficiency in Indonesian, Thai, or Vietnamese. The SEAFLI program is administered through the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Please read the information below and follow the links for further information. Contact the SEAFLI Coordinator in Madison, with questions: seafli@lpo.wisc.edu
SEAFLI students participate in a full-time domestic summer program offered at UW-Madison through SEASSI. Students then travel abroad for a full-time fall semester of language and cultural study at the abroad location:
- Indonesian: Malang, East Java, Indonesia at the State University of Malang (UM)
- Thai: Chiang Mai, Thailand at the Language Institute for Chiang Mai University (LICMU)
- Vietnamese: Hanoi, Vietnam at the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS)
Requests for additional study through the spring semester can be made to Boren during the application process. All participants must complete both the summer domestic and fall abroad programs.
In addition to full-time language courses, students will have tutors (i.e., ‘language partners’), language conversation tables (summer), homestays (fall), and cultural excursions to help ensure that language goals are being met. Details on these additional benefits will be provided at the start of each program in summer and fall.
